I moderated a panel at the ALS Association called "Living with ALS." It was actually more about "Researching with ALS."
Dr. Eric Pioro of the Cleveland Clinic gave an overview of ALS and ALS research. Tom Petzinger, EVP of Knopp Neurosciences, filled in for Dr. Mike Bozik who had a family emergency, and spoke about a drug similar to pramiprexole that his company is putting through clinical trials. Dr. Raymond Onders of Case Western Reserve University presented diaphragm pacing for respiratory failure.
Lots of patients and their families were in attendance. In many of their questions, you could sense their frustration with the clinical trials and FDA approval process. The doctors empathized, but also emphasized the necessity of due diligence.
Best slide: an old photo of Lou Gehrig being embraced by Babe Ruth.
