Dr. Maria Simbra is an Emmy award-winning medical correspondent for a local news TV station in Pittsburgh since 2002.
She earned a master's degree in journalism and mass communications from Point Park University in 2003. Her articles and reviews about medical journalism have appeared in PLoS Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and Neurology Reviews. She has been quoted by "Television Week" and "USA Today."
In addition to reporting, she has been a clinical assistant professor of neurology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and was in private practice neurology prior to that. Transitioning into a new specialty, she is pursuing a masters degree in public health, focusing on how the mass media affect public health.
She teaches medical journalism to journalism students and medical students at Pittsburgh area universities. She speaks at national and international medical journalism conferences, and presented a paper at the World Journalism Education Congress in 2007.
She has been on the National Association of Medical Communicator's Board of Directors since 2007. She is currently serving as vice-president.
She served on the Association of Health Care Journalists Board of Directors from 2005 to 2007. In 2006, she made Pittsburgh Magazine's "40 under 40" list, honoring the city's influential young people. In 2010, along with other notable physician television journalists, she was named by TV Week on a national list of "Doctors to Watch."
She was presented with the 2006 National Association of Medical Communicators Award of Excellence. She was nominated for a National Academy Television Arts and Sciences Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award in 2006, 2007, and 2008, and awarded an Emmy in 2008.
