Fat Tuesday

Happy Mardi Gras, everyone!

Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow...is Lent.

As Tom Ehrich explains on the website explorefaith.org, "Lent has become a time for penitence and self-examination, study, and spiritual discipline. Perhaps the discipline most commonly associated with Lent is fasting...in order to be made mindful of one's humanity and of God's providence."

Memorable sacrifices of Lents-past include the times I gave up chocolate, bacon, chewing gum, and clothes shopping. I rebounded something fierce once Easter came around, so I've decided I shouldn't give up anything that is too bad for me -- the repercussions afterward can be unhealthy.

This year I'm going to try to think one nice thing a day about the single-most challenging person in my life.

Do you observe Lent? How do you decide how you will mark the 40 days?
